The Sims 4 Keeps crashing on Gameplay after 10-20 M of playing, and ate 99% cpu and memory. [SOLVED]

Hey everyone

So i've been playing the sims 4, but it keeps on crashing on gameplay or cas ( 10 - 20 minutes ). i have all the packs and currently the toddlers stuff. i check the task manager. when the sims 4 crashed, it ate 99% of cpu and memory usage.. i lower every settings in the game and played on windowed mode, but it still crashing.. the issue had been here since last week i installed this game.


i just scrolling through the forums and i stumble on what appears to be a fix!, but sadly there's no instructions for windows 10, only for the old operating system. the fix is in this forum at section no 5 :

I have 3 GB RAM and running on a windows 10 with 32-bit operating system. the post stated that, "If you have a computer with a 32-bit Windows system, and you are running The Sims 4 on it (by using the TS4.exe), then the game will - by default - only access 2GB of your available RAM. It can be a problem and lead to crashes, but it doesn't have to be for all people." can someone please help me? with an up-to-date tutorial ?. i'm not a tech guy that knows pc very well. i only know pc from the software on stuff. so if i say something wrong, i'm sorry.

Well in case you didn't know, the minimum requirements for cats and dogs have been upped:

MINIMUM OS: 64 Bit Required. Windows 7 (SP1), Windows 8, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10

CPU: 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, AMD Athlon 64 Dual-Core 4000+ or equivalent (For computers using built-in graphics chipsets, the game requires 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.0 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-62 or equivalent)

RAM: At least 4 GB RAM

DISC DRIVE: DVD ROM drive required for installation only

HARD DRIVE: At least 3 GB of free space (14 GB if installing with The Sims 4) with at least 1 GB additional space for custom content and saved games

VIDEO: 128 MB of Video RAM and support for Pixel Shader 3.0. Supported Video Cards: NVIDIA GeForce 6600 or better, ATI Radeon X1300 or better, Intel GMA X4500 or better

DIRECTX: DirectX 9.0c compatible

SOUND CARD: DirectX 9.0c Compatible


ONLINE REQUIREMENTS: Internet connection required for product activation.

Hello and welcome to the Forum @Hardernater,

If you have enough harddrive space available, please try this. Re-install the TS4 basegame again; can be the one from G4TW or any other uploader. It has to be installed (of course) in a different location than your current installation.

Go to Documents\Electronic Arts and change the folder name of The Sims 4 to anything else, that you can later recognize too, for example The Sims 4_old.

After that, start up just the base game, and play with it for a while. Compare the game performance between the two installations. Do you notice differences?

okay.i tried it and it works fine, 1 hour passed and no crashing whatsoever. but why after i install the toddlers pack it crashed?. is there something more to it?.


also, even though it doesn't crashed. it still ate 99% my cpu and memory usage.

If you migrate to Windows 10 64 bit, it will work. You are running 32 bit Windows on a system that can run 64 bit, so you might as well upgrade anyway. It may help with other applications as well.

Microsoft has instructions here. Back up any important files and then follow the instructions.

You're below the minimum spec to run the game properly... 3gig is far too little. I run on 16G, and I have used over 50% at times.

No, they're not. These are the specs for the Toddler Pack. As noted before, the Cats and Dog pack changes the requirements.

is there a fix to my issue where i can play the toddlers stuff pack without crashing often ?, i want to play the game so bad.. i didn't really like the base game because there's not much stuff to do.

Follow the instructions in the link I posted. Your game will not run nicely without running in 64 bit.

@Hardernater,

In the long run, expect the system requirements to at least remain at the current level (of "Cats & Dogs"), or even go one step higher. I myself can't complain, and can't even properly "re-enact" these types of problems, since I'm running a x64-Windows with 16GB of RAM. 

I'm not entirely sure in your case if installing a 64-bit Windows can make that much of a difference, since you only have 3GB of RAM at the moment, so yes...if possible for you, you should try upgrading your computer. I'm sorry I can't give a 'cheaper' solution.

Installing 64 bit Windows should help. Sims 4 gets locked to only 2GB of RAM on 32 bit. There's a way you can force it to use up to the OS-locked 4GB, but I forgot how. OP might as well install 64 bit anyway - their applications should all run better.

it's okay , i'll try to migrate my windows when i finally found my flash disk, i lost it in my wardrobe a few nights back. also is there a way to view the crash lag for the sims 4? . and before i do any of that, i'm gonna try to install the Get to Work expansion and mess around with it. see if it crash, and sorry for the broken english not a native english here

anyway thanks for trying to help me, as i said to mister ghostman. i'll try to migrate my windows when i found my flashdisk.

you guys telling her to migrate aren't taking into consideration that other games may wind up with issues afterwards. I am having an issue where the game crashes when i try to play a family and i am running the 64 bit version myself with 6 GB of ram. i don't think its because shes on windows 7 and needs to go up to windows 10. trust me on this, because ive been there. I have fallen into so many issues with other programs because i upgraded, forcing me to lose everything in downgrading. I am not sure what the fix is but i don't think its upgrade.

OP is not on Windows 7. OP is on a 32bit version of Windows 10 on 64bit hardware. Migrating to the correct version of Windows for their hardware is the best thing they can do. Anyway, a lot of compatibility issues between Windows 7 and Windows 10 have been fixed.

so i've just checked the crash log, the game crashed after i apply the Get Together Pack, Get to Work seems to work just fine

As Cats & Dogs requires more of your computer, this problem might be caused by OVERHEATING.
Make sure all ventilation slots are clear of dust (laptop especially bottom side, do not play on a bed or simular soft underground)

Thanks for everyone that is trying to help me, i just solved it mysled by turning off all background  app. for the game not to crash i actually build a basement so the game didn't render the outisde world
and it did!, it did'nt crashed like it usually do
