Sims can become a mermaid in the following ways:

• Buying the "Mermadic Kelp" lifetime reward.
  
• Obtaining Mermadic Kelp from a mermaid.
  
• Having a child with a mermaid. (50% chance if the Sim is non-mermaid, 100% if both Sims are mermaids.)

Torrents, duh. Sims 3 expansions are always pirated early, the base game was "leaked" almost a month before it's release. I got my first ban on MTS cause I posted pictures from it two weeks prior to release, damn DRM fangirls.

I found several too.

I wouldn't be in a hurry to download it though. Playing an expansion with outdated mods can be hazardous to your gane's health, and most modders buy them legit so updating will take a while.

That's a base game feature, it was added in 1.55.

I'm tempted to torrent it, but a few days ago I got an email from Cox saying someone was complaining that they caught me downloading. Was trying to dl a 70gb of the entire sims store and I guess someone traced the torrent. 

I'll just wait for my cd on tuesday. =(
