Netbook running super slow... Empty Netbook running super slow...

Post by Guest Fri 17 Aug 2012, 04:27

Hey everyone,

My brother got a Acer Aspire One netbook for his brithday from my parents so he could take to uni, when he first got it, it came with windows 7 starter, and he decided that he would upgrade to windows 7 home premium, and since then its been going really really slow. When you start it up it takes about 10-15 minutes before you can actually do anything on it, web pages take awhile to actually load (like 3-5 minutes) and just opening firefox takes ages, which really doesn't help him when hes at uni and needs to do some quick research. Hes had it for around a year, and doesn't really use it that often because of how slow it is.

Do you guys think its the operating system hes running making it slow? What operating system would you recommend? (he said he didn't like windows 7 starter because he felt limited in what he could do, altho I've never tried windows 7 starter myself, so i'm unsure of the limitations it contains)
And how would I be able to put a new operating system on (remember its a netbook, so it has no disc drive) Any other suggestions?

Thanks Very Happy

Hello,

I really can't tell you anything, I've never even used a netbook myself.
But if it is the OS, it may be possible to install another using USB.

Hello,

You can always use an external CD/DVD drive or, indeed, install Windows 7 via an USB stick.
But the first problem is the hardware itself. If it's really a netbook, like you say, and not a notebook, you won't be able to run anything higher than Windows 7 Starter, lol.

Netbooks are really a stripped version of notebooks, you can not do much on them. They are really only for using things like Word, e-mail, internet.
I can't directly tell why yours is slow, but it's most likely the laptop's hardware specifications. You can try reinstalling Starter or maybe even Home Premium, but don't expect miracles.

Yeah it is a NETbook, yeah its most likely a hardware thing, I mean it only has like 1GB of RAM, not to sure on the CPU or GPU. It was bought just for study, but it's even too slow for that! lol.

I'm thinking I'll just put windows 7 starter back on it for him, atleast it might be usable then.
Do you know how I can put win 7 starter back on it? Currently it has windows 7 home premium, not too sure on how to put win7 starter back though.

Thanks for your reply btw. Smile

Hello,

Just format the HDD during the installation of Windows (All data will be lost, so be sure to make a backup!) and choose to install "Windows Starter". Or if you have downloaded a Windows 7 Starter image/USB file, you will only be able to choose the Starter edition.
Also, be sure to install a 32-bit operating system.

Thanks for your help! I just did a factory restore on his laptop, everything went fine, I've been just using his laptop for the past 3-4 hours and its running 100% faster, I think perhaps it was infected by a virus, although his AV didn't detect anything, or a software install error. But anyway it seems fixed now.

But, about 2 and a bit hours in I got a bluescreen, don't remember exactly what it said, but after restarting and logging in this message poped up:

Problem signature:

Any suggestion what the cause is/problem is? I've been using the netbook for 2 more hours since then, and haven't had another bluescreen.

Sadly 1GB RAM hardly cuts the cake these days :/
I can JUST play The Sims 3, Skyrim etc. On my 'gaming laptop' from 2006! LOL. Settings all on low of course. I'm super excited though for my new gaming PC that's gonna have a 24" screen xD Almost as big as the 32" TV I have in my room.

Hello,

I can't play Skyrim at all. I used to play TS3 with all expansions, but after Showtime I had to ditch the stuff packs because it was unplayable. With Supernatural and Seasons coming out, I think I'll skip Supernatural in favour of Seasons. I may ditch Showtime as well, since I don't really use it's features at all.
I hate that I can't play Skyrim though. I've played MorrowinD and Oblivion too and I was really looking forward to Skyrim. I've been hoping to build a new pc for the past 6 months, so far no luck and it'll be another while before I can actually do it.

You did just give me an idea though... my father just gave us a laptop he no longer uses, I have no idea what's inside but I may want to check it out.

Aw thats a shame! Skyrim is such a great game! I don't have any problems with playing the sims, it runs fine on low settings, I'm just hoping seasons doesn't require any fancy graphics to see the rain/snow etc.

Skyrim runs alright, although it occasionally gets lag spikes, and movement gets a little glittery, I find myself just standing around most of the time in Skyrim, just observing the scenery, that is something AMAZING, which makes me even more excited for my new gaming PC.

I took this on medium to low settings and IMO it still came out AMAZING!

It sounds like a good idea to check out your fathers laptop, it might come in handy..

Hello,

I have Sims on medium settings, due to my reasonable graphicscard. But Skyrim requires a dual core CPU so I can totally forget about that. I'm not worried, I'll play it eventually even if it takes me a while to save up for the parts, I will get my new pc.

I can only dream about 24" screens. My spare monitor is only 15" Facepalm it can go as high as 1024x768 LOL.

I have 2 screens, the one I use is 1280x1024 and my spare one is 1980x1080, I have a special reason why I'm not using the bigger one.. My PC is not the best, but I can play Sims on high / medium on this pc with the 1280x1024 resolution with no lag.
When I'd play high / medium on 1980x1080 my game would die because of lag.. So I prefer the smaller screens for gaming Very Happy
For the rest, I don't have a game pc, although I can play Skyrim on medium and Sims on high / medium. And I just changed the graphics card to a 31 euros one Very Happy
As long as I can play The Sims 3, SimCity, Minecraft and when Sims 4 comes out that one too I'll be fine!
I'd like to have the best gaming PC for a day, I bet it would be the best thing that ever happened to me ^^

But you know what I think is odd, I might just sound stupid now.
But I can watch a Sims 3 video on the HIGHEST quality + Highest graphics in game. But I can't play it on those settings.. I think I'm just stupid but it's an odd thing I've always been wondering about..

Hello,

That's probably because it's not just the graphics your system is working on, there's also a lot going on behind the scenes that isn't happening when you watch the video.

This PC was pretty good for gaming when I got it. It was build for Oblivion back then. Six years ago lol.

//EDIT

Hi,

I didn't want to post a new thread so I just thought I'd ask
here, I'm getting a new PC and it comes with 8GBs of RAM, so I'll need a
64 bit system, what's the difference between the 32 bit and the 64 bit?
and how will it impact on what I do on the PC (So what are my
limitations etc when it comes to running a 64 bit system)?

Also,
can I just install Windows 7 like normal, or do I need to do something
different in the install to select 64 bit? Or do I need a Windows 7 64
bit specific download?

Thanks Very Happy

Hello!

I'm quite sure that any Windows 7 you get will detect your 64 bit system and instal the 64 bit version.
One way to put it is that the 64 bit runs faster and 64 bit optimized programs will always have the 32 bit version.

As the number of bits increases there are two important benefits.

  • More bits means that data can be processed in larger chunks which also means more accurately.

  • More bits means our system can point to or address a larger number of locations in physical memory.

32-bit systems were once desired because they could address (point
to) 4 Gigabytes (GB) of memory in one go. Some modern applications
require more than 4 GB of memory to complete their tasks so 64-bit
systems are now becoming more attractive because they can potentially
address up to 4 billion times that many locations.

Here is the problem, while most of the software available today is 32-bit, the processors we buy are almost all 64-bit.

Now we'll look at those three components of your system. In simple
terms they are three layers with the processor or CPU as the central or
lowest layer and the application as the outermost or highest layer as
shown below:

Netbook running super slow... 32-bit-64-bit-explained-442-322

To run a 64-bit operating system you need support from the lower level: the 64-bit CPU.

To run a 64-bit application you need support from all lower levels: the 64-bit OS and the 64-bit CPU.

This simplification will be enough for us to look what happens when
we mix the 32-bit and 64-bit parts. But if you want to understand the
issue more deeply then you will also need to consider the hardware that
supports the CPU and the device drivers that allow the OS and the
applications to interface with the system hardware.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

64-bit is slowly getting the new standard. Back with Vista and XP almost everyone used 32-bit, since you could hardly find any 64-bit programs.
Also, if you want to install a 64-bit Windows, be sure that it's actually present on the installation disc. Some Windows installation discs only have the 32-bit version on them.
During the Windows installation you usually get to choose which version you want to install.

Note that "x86" stands for 32-bit.
