How can I change the default location of saved files (from the OneDrive folder to local)? Empty How can I change the default location of saved files (from the OneDrive folder to local)?

Post by Guest Sat 12 Aug 2017, 18:28

I recently got a new laptop with Windows 10, and decided to install TS4 (I was previously using a system with Windows 7).

After playing a couple of days, I noticed that my saved game files were being stored in

C:\Users\[username]\OneDrive\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4

instead of

C:\Users\[username]\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4

as it used to in my previous system. And I don't want these files backed up, so I moved them from the first location (in OneDrive) to the second (local) thinking that would work (it didn't; when I loaded the game after moving the folder it was like a fresh install).

How can I fix this? OneDrive came with the laptop, and I use it frequently so I don't want to modify the location of it's 'Documents' folder entirely.

How To Change Where OneDrive Saves Files:
1.Right-click the OneDrive icon in the System Tray and select Settings.
2.Unlink OneDrive from the PC. ( you will get the Welcome to OneDrive screen with a button to “Get started”) ignore it for now!
3.Open your OneDrive folder at its location  (usually in C:\Users\\OneDrive) select it and move it to a new place using the ‘Move to’ button at the very top of the Home tab in the explorer ribbon. --> Choose the folder location where you need to save your OneDrive files in the future. (you need to select "Choose location" from the drop-down menu to find the external drive you want to move it)
4.After you have the folder moved to its new spot, sign back into OneDrive (point 2) when you sign in, OneDrive will ask you where you want to save folders to with a suggested location (your User folder) already selected. Instead of accepting this suggested location, click ‘Change’ and then navigate to the where you moved the OneDrive folder to in the previous step

When the following dialog message (Files already exist) comes up, just click Use this location since your data will be merged.

Hope it is what you are looking for.

Exclude onedrive from filesaving: (Windows 10)
(first copy f.e. the folder Electronic Arts to your Documents-section)

1. Keep Windowskey pressed and type R
2. In the window type GPEdit.msc and click on OK
3. In the menu on the left-hand site click on Local Group Policy Editor

4. Select Computerconfiguration -> Management template -> Windows parts -> OneDrive

5. Dubbleclcik on Prevent that OneDrive will be used for file storage
6. In the next window check the option switched-on

7. Click Apply and then OK

Note: This is translated from Dutch, so probably the expressions used differ from the English terms in your Windows

Hi, group policy editor (gpedit.msc) is apparently not available on the Home version of Windows 10. So I can't try this fix out, thanks though. Any other ideas?

Actually, what I want to change is where the game (TS4) saves its files. It's doing it on C:\(user)\OneDrive\Documents instead of C:\(user)\Documents, as it usually does by default (i.e. locally).

If I tried this, and changed where OneDrive saves its files, either:
I'll have the same problem and the game will continue to back up on my cloud (which I don't want)
or
next time I run the game it'll be like a fresh installation (no data to load; all the pack pop-ups come up).

WhatDidUJustCallMe?
Any suggestions?

Thanks for responding so quickly!
If I understand correctly, this would remove OneDrive from my computer entirely? I don't want to do that, as I said I actually use it frequently and find it quite handy.
Is it possible I messed something up while installing the game - then I could uninstall and reinstall, but if I know what it is, I won't make the same mistake again.

By using my method the folder OneDrive on your computer can no longer store new elements.
So copy your existing Electronic Arts folder to Documents.
Now the Sims can no longer access OneDrive.
Yes, its either or there's no way in between.

Thanks. Will be able to continue using OneDrive though? I use it frequently.

I've been trying for a solution where you can still keep using OneDrive except for your The Sims 4 folder.

1. Copy your present folder The Sims 4 from your OneDrive to another location C:\user\Documents\Electronic Arts
2. In your present folder The Sims 4 rightclick on the path that shows something like C: >OneDrive >The Sims 4 and select Copy address as text.
3. Delete your present folder The Sims 4 from OneDrive
4. Rightclick on the Windowsicon left bottowm in your taskbar - select Prompt as Administrator
5. It will show something like C:\WINDOWS\System32>
6. Now type mklink /d and keep CTRL pressen and type V (to paste the path you copied at item 2)
It will look like mklink /d "C:\OneDrive\The Sims 4" "C:\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4" (note the """and spaces)
Type an Enter

Now check it:
1. In OneDrive, where you had The Sims 4 you now mujst see a shortcut icon for the Stims 4
2. When you click it open you'll still see the various items but they are in fact no longer there.
