Question about updating Sims 3.

I was wondering if I downloaded the newest EP, which is University life. Will I have to update my my base game?
My current base game is 1.12 and Ambitions is 4.0.87
I wanna update my sims base game so I can use some mods.

Some help would be nice. On how I can update everything to the newest patch or Is it easier if I just install University life?

For university life you need I think update 1.50 or 1.49 as minimum.
